The Bureau of Investigative Services provides follow-up and specialized investigative services. The Bureau is headed by a Major, and two Captains under the Major's command. One of the Captains is the executive officer for the Bureau, while the other Captain is over Special Operations. The Bureau is currently composed of the following divisions: Homicide, Robbery/Assault, Burglary/Theft, Fraud, Identification, Youth Services, Predator Apprehension and Special Operations.

This division deals primarily with criminal or suspicious deaths that involve long-term and/or high profile investigations. This unit handles both recent cases and pursues unsolved cases from previous years.



This division specializes in other Part One crimes, including commercial and personal robberies, as well as assault crimes.


Investigators in this division deal with property-related criminal investigations including burglary and various types of thefts.

The Pawn Shop Detail oversees local pawn shop businesses. Its activities include checking pawn shop articles as possibly stolen items, entering and maintaining a computerized database of all pawned articles and the investigation of persons involved with stolen pawned items.


The Fraud Division is composed of two units, which deal with property- or economic-type of crimes.  The two units are the Financial / White Collar Crimes Unit and the Motor Vehicle Theft Unit. Each unit works in an integrated fashion with other divisions within Investigative Services as well as other bureaus of the Department.  They also have a close working relationship with associated federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

The Financial / White Collar Crimes Unit investigates activities involving improper use of documents of legal tender and other criminal activities commonly referred to as "white collar" type crimes.

The Motor Vehicle Theft Unit specializes in the investigation and recovery of stolen vehicles and provides administrative oversight of impounded and unclaimed vehicles..


The Identification Unit is a highly specialized unit of trained and certified technicians who provide photo and evidence processing services in a supporting role at crime scenes and in follow-up investigation activities. The Identification Unit for regulatory and other non-criminal public assistance purpose also provides fingerprinting and photography services.


These detectives concentrate on the illegal activities of juveniles (persons less than 17 years of age).  Youth Services also investigates missing persons reports for both juveniles and adults.

The Family Violence Unit investigates cases of violence within the family in an attempt to reduce that type of violence, as well as assisting victims in obtaining counseling or other support that they may need.


The Sex Crimes Unit specialized in rapes and other sexually related criminal activities, including Online Predators. The investigators are highly trained in dealing with the sexual offender and assisting the victims in these types of incidents. Click here to search Georgia's Registered Sex Offenders database. The Gang Task Force monitors gang activity in Columbus. The GREAT Program is a specialized course of instruction discouraging gang involvement among our local students.

The Fugitive Squad retrieves persons who have outstanding arrest warrants that originate from our department. This unit also handles inter- and intrastate prisoner extraditions.


The Special Operations Unit investigates all complaints concerning narcotics, trafficking, prostitution, gambling and ABC violations. In addition, this unit consists of a Tactical Unit that can be deployed to handle any situations, which require an immediate law enforcement response, such as a crime suppression detail for burglaries and robberies.


The Intelligence Unit is responsible for maintaining a liaison with all local, state and federal homeland security agencies. The unit also disseminates intelligence to other intelligence units as well as other law enforcement agencies.
