The Mission of the Public Works Department is to efficientsly, effectively, and equitably, provide services to the citizens of Columbus. Georgia in the areas listed below. Public Works will continuously strive to enhance the quality of life for the citizens and employees in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. We will be innovative and use industry best practices in our daily activities.
Harvey Milner - Deputy Director, Budget, Logistics & Fleet Maintenance
There are a total of thirty-seven employees in Fleet Maintenance. Thirty-two are maintenance technicians and five are administrative and support personnel.
History is alive and well among the combined 120 acres of Historic downtown cemeteries.
The responsibilities of the Drivers Training Program is to conduct initial drivers training, refresher drivers training, flagging classes and testing of CDL drivers within the Consolidated Government only. Additional responsibilities include serving as the Safety Officer for the Department of Public Works ensuring all safety measures are adhered to by all employees of this department.
The Facilities Maintenance Division is responsible for the general and preventive maintenance of all City facilities to include, but not limited to the following: carpentry/painting, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, irrigation, and custodial duties. This division also provides a broad range of general support and administrative services to all departments of the Columbus Consolidated Government.
Urban Forestry & Beautification
Providing tree planting, pruning, and removals, along the public right-of-ways, parks, and other Muscogee County properties.
Provides state-of-the-art waste disposal facilities for the greater Muscogee County
The Rainwater Division is responsible for all storm water systems in the city which includes storm water pipes, inlets, and open ditches. They are not responsible for water and sewer lines connected to houses and commercial real estate
The Special Enforcement Division enforces local and state environmental laws. This includes but is not limited to Animal Control, Illegal dumping, solid waste, business licenses, dray tags, mobile home tags, alcohol licensing, junk vehicles, overgrown lots, scrap tire management, etc.
Heavy Equipment Division
Provides many different services for the city of Columbus, Georgia: Street Sweepers, Schatulga Road Fuel Pump operation, Fuel to the municipal golf courses, emergency vehicles, emergency generators, re-grading of ditches, excavating and grading all city projects, loading equipment, road-shoulder maintenance and supports emergency management on fires, hazardous spills, storms and demolitions.
Street Maintenance Division
Responsible for providing services to residents of Columbus, related to street maintenance, sidewalk, curb and gutter, fence, and guardrail repairs.
Waste Management Division
Services include household garbage collection and recycling.
