In 1985, Crime Stoppers, a non-profit organization operated by the Columbus Police Department for the benefit of all the law enforcement agencies in the Chattahoochee Valley, began operations.  Cooperating agencies include the Muscogee County Sheriff's Department, Phenix City (AL) Police Department, Russell County (AL) Sheriff's Department and the Ft. Benning Military Police Detachment.  Crime Stoppers is funded by private donations.

Crime Stoppers receives information from the public on all types of crimes and wanted individuals. Each tip is evaluated on its value to the public safety of the community and rewards are paid out anonymously. Individuals who call Crime Stoppers receive an identifying number. No names are used. If the information received is used, the person supplying it will receive a cash award.  It is picked up at a local bank using the Crime Stoppers number as an identifier. The person's name is never known.

Each week, a particular case is featured in the news media but Crime Stoppers can pay off on any crime whether it was featured that week or not. Rewards can go as high as $1000.  In some instances, private or corporate rewards are offered, in addition to Crime Stoppers' rewards.

On March 29, 2000, 13-year-old Markel Ervin was a passenger in a 1987 Mazda 626 traveling in the St. Mary's Road area of Columbus. At approximately 8:10 P.M., a teal-colored Chevrolet Corsica occupied by 4 black males and one white male began blowing their car horn at the Ervin vehicle. The driver of Ervin's vehicle said Ervin became irate and began blowing the horn of the vehicle he was occupying. Obscene gestures were apparently also exchanged between occupants of the two vehicles. The Chevrolet followed the Mazda out St. Mary's Road toward the Bunker Hill subdivision where one of the occupants of the Corsica fired a handgun into the Mazda. One round struck Ervin in the head, killing him. Investigators found ten 9mm shell casings near where the shooting occurred. The fatal round entered the Mazda's trunk, passed through the passenger seat striking Ervin in the head as he was attempting to duck for cover.
