The Veterans Parkway Streetscape and Pedestrian Enhancement Project will turn Veterans Parkway into a true parkway that will become a signature boulevard in our community. The project consists of two phases: Phase I will begin at the 13th Street intersection and go to 8th Street, and Phase II will begin at the 8th Street intersection and go to Victory Drive. Improvements will include landscaping; the relocation of utilities; the addition of medians; and hardscape items such as new directional signage and lighting.
The project originated between the leaders of Trees Columbus and Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Board Member Sam Wellborn. Mr. Wellborn secured a commitment from DOT to provide $3 million in funding, with Trees Columbus providing $750,000 of private funding as a match. Trees Columbus presented the idea to Columbus Council, which officially approved it to be included in the city streetscape program.
The Phase I groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 17, 2009. Approximately 75 people attended the ceremony including City officials, representatives of several organizations and interested citizens.
Phase I is being jointly funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and Trees Columbus. Phase II is being funded through the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Transportation Enhancement program. Completion is anticipated by the end of 2010.
Phase I (from the 13th Street intersection to 8th Street) is under construction right now and landscaping is in progress at this time along with utility relocation Phase II (from the 8th Street intersection to Victory Drive) should start construction in the winter of 2011. The entire project is expected to be completed by summer 2012.
