Question: Does it cost anything to take a case before the Board of Historic & Architectural Review (BHAR)?
Answer: Fee amount will depend upon type of work being done. Please see application for correct amount.
Question: If I live in a Historic District, do I have to get approval for paint color?
Answer: No, only structural changes to the exterior of the house or surrounding property have to be approved through the BHAR. Please refer to the BHAR design guidelines for information on types of structural changes requiring approval.
Question: How can I find out if my property lies within a Historic District?
Answer: Contact the Planning Department and we will be able to quickly locate your property and let you know if your property lies within a Historic District.
Question: What are the boundaries of the Historic Districts located in Columbus?
Answer: Download a copy of the Historic Districts map. Please contact the Planning Department for additional information.
Question: Are there any extra regulations on landscaping in Historic Districts?
Answer: No, there are no extra regulations regarding landscaping within the Historic Districts.
Question: Who serves on the BHAR?
Answer: The BHAR is comprised of concerned citizens and area professionals who are genuinely interested in preserving the Historic Districts in Columbus. The members serve on a completely volunteer basis.
