Transportation Improvements
The Columbus Consolidated Government is working hard to make necessary improvements in different areas of the city to increase safety, security, and connectivity in order to improve the quality of life for all citizens.
These road projects are subject to change due to several factors and without any previous notice.
Here is a list of some of the main transportation projects that are taking place right now:
- Forrest Road Improvements Project from S.R. 22 (Macon Road) to Woodruff Farm Road: This project will add pedestrian facilities from Macon Road to Woodruff Farm Road. It is in the early stages of planning, so the limits of widening and intersection improvements are currently being developed. This project will complete improvements to the Forrest Road corridor from Macon Road to Schatulga Road. More information about this project can be found at www.forrestroad.wordpress.com
- Moon Road from Wilbur Drive to Whittlesey Boulevard (Phase I):The road is designed for a three (3) lane widening project intersection improvement. The Preliminary Right-of-way plans and title search have been completed. Right of Way acquisition has started and should take approximately one year. Construction is estimated to start first part of 2012.
- Moon Road from J.R. Allen Parkway to Veterans Parkway (Phase III):This project will widen the roadway from two (2) to four (4) lanes with a median. Construction has started and is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
- Veterans Parkway from Old Moon Road to Hancock Road:This is a Georgia Department of Transportation project that will widen the roadway from two/three (2/3) to four (4) lanes with a median. The Federal Highway Administration is in the process of clearing the environmental assessment for the project. The purchase of right-of-way has begun and will take approximately 24 months to complete. Acquisition will be performed by the Georgia Department of Transportation. Construction of the project is expected to take approximately 24 months to complete after all Right-of-way has been obtained.
- The Whittlesey Road Widening Project from Veterans Parkway to Rollins Drive: Right-of-way acquisition for this project continues and is estimated to be complete by late August 2011. Recent utility issue problems have delayed the project. This project will widen the roadway from two/three (2) to four (4) lanes with a median and turn lanes. Construction is anticipated to begin after April 2012,and should take approximately 36 months to complete.
- Double Churches/Whitesville Intersection:This transportation improvement project will improve the turn lanes as well as the acceleration/deceleration lanes to better the traffic movement and prevent stacking of traffic. Acquisition is in progress and construction should begin during spring 2012.
- Double Churches/Veterans Parkway Intersection: This transportation improvement project will improve the turn lanes as well as the acceleration/deceleration lanes to better the traffic movement and prevent stacking of traffic. Design is underway and construction should begin during summer 2012.
- River Road and Bradley Park Drive: This transportation improvement project will improve the turn lanes as well as the acceleration/deceleration lanes to better the traffic movement and prevent stacking of traffic. Design is underway and construction should begin during summer 2012.
- Talbotton/Warm Springs Road from 7th Avenue to Woodruff Road: Final design corrections are being made, which have delayed the project by approximately 6 months. Funding has been approved for the acquisition. The Georgia Department of Transportation will take approximately 36 months to acquire the Right-of-way and 24 months for construction. The projected starting date is 2013.
- Eastern Connector (Lynch Road) from Chattsworth Road to U.S. 80 (Macon Road): This project will widen the roadway from two (2) to four (4) lanes. This project is under construction and should be complete by the end of 2011.
- Cargo Drive/Transportation Road Roundabout: This transportation improvement project consists on the construction of a roundabout. This project has been awarded and construction should start late 2011. Construction should take between 4 to 6 months to complete.
- Woodruff Farm road and Corporate Ridge: This intersection improvement project will allow for right/left turn lanes and acceleration lanes. Acquisition is in progress and should take approximately one year. Construction to follow with a 12 month build time.
- The Forrest Road Widening Project from Woodruff Farm Road to Schatulga Road: This project will widen the road from two (2) lanes to three (3) lanes and it is now under design. Two bridges are scheduled to be replaced on Forrest Road, one over Bull Creek and the other one over Cooper Creek. Both bridges will have sidewalks and railing. The project is under Right-of-Way acquisition right now and is estimated to start construction in 2013. More information about this project can be found at Columbus.PublishPath.com.
- Brown Avenue Bridge Project: This project is located at Brown Avenue over Norfolk Southern Railroad and is in the process of being reconstructed to improve the traffic flow in the area and provide safe vehicular and pedestrian access. The replacement bridge will have two 12-feet lanes with sidewalks in both directions. Right now, the project is under ROW acquisition and it will take 12 months to complete. Construction is estimated to start on the first quarter of 2013.
Completed Projects
The following transportation improvement projects have recently been completed:
- Aflac / Mutec: This project consisted on improving the signalization of turn lanes. The main purpose was to improve the flow of traffic coming to/from the Corporate Ridge Industrial Park area.
- Lakebottom Improvements: A federal transportation enhancement grant provided 80% of the funding for the recently completed improvements on the Lakebottom Walking Trail. The City provided 20% matching funds.
