Interstate 185 at US Highway 280, also known as Victory Drive, serves as the primary entrance and exit to Ft. Benning, Ga. In addition to being the primary ingress and egress from Ft. Benning, this interchange will also serve as the exit interchange for the majority of the traffic visiting the National Infantry Museum.
There is much excitement about the possibility of finally having a worthy entrance to the Ft. Benning military facility, which has been nonexistent since the interstate was completed 25 years ago.
The current plans define the monuments as tall pre-cast column structures with bronze figures on top. These bronze figures will depict the historic symbols for the Infantry, "Iron Mike" and for the Armored Schools mounted rider known as "Old Bill" which is from a sculpture created by Frederick Remington in the mid 1800's. In addition to these large monuments, there will be multiple American flags with fountains flowing vertically in front of the flagstaffs and lush landscaping throughout the entire site.
This is a Landscaping Project designed to welcome people who travel to or from Ft. Benning and Columbus, Ga. The project has been bid and is now under construction. It is estimated that it will take 12 months to complete.
