In 1998 the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department became the First Parks and Recreation Department in Georgia to become nationally accredited. That recognition and honor is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the department's employees

Current Projects in Parks & Recreation

Our SPLOST package is becoming increasingly obvious within the city. All of the new facilities you see and or visit , from pools to recreation centers have been constructed using SPLOST (Special Local Option Sales Tax) funding.

Thanks to public and private partnerships, along with various grant funding sources , we have been able to make improvements and upgrade infrastructure throughout the city. The Community Development Block Grant has been instrumental in preparing facilities that meet the needs of the future.

Additionally, all 1993 SPLOST projects have been completed, and we are well underway with completing a new and exciting venture at South Commons. This will provide the public with a pool, skate park and ice rink under one roof. Very few places in the country have anything of this magnitude. With this addition , a virtual Mega Plex of activity will be available. What was once underused has now become an area that highlights activity for everyone. Civic Center, Golden Park, Memorial Stadium, South Commons Softball, are available with a dramatic tie in to the Riverwalk steps away.

When it was originally presented, the idea of “ Super Centers”, or buildings and acreage allotted to greenspace, athletic and recreational services was designed to provide all populations with recreational activities within two to five miles of their home. This has been a tremendous success story for Parks and Recreation , in that it has allowed us to become more viable and efficient while still providing top notch services.

Several projects under way include complete reviatalization of Fox and Fluellen centers to provide state of the art activities and programming for active seniors and youth.

We are continuously striving for improvement in all aspects of our service to the community and are proud to assist with input on making the city a fun and safe place to live and play.
