The comprehensive sign ordinance, adopted by Columbus Council, February 10, 1998, requires political signs to be three (3) feet inside the property line. Signs may not be placed on the public right-of-way.
A simple rule of thumb to determine the right-of-way is three (3) feet behind the imaginary line formed by utility poles, three (3) feet behind a sidewalk, or three (3) feet beyond the back slope of a right-of-way ditch line if there are no poles or sidewalks.
Signs over fifteen (15) square feet must be permitted. This will require a site plan, inspections, etc.
Banners must be attached at all corners to a permanent building. Do not hang banners between two stakes, or on any other sign.
Portable signs (those mounted on a trailer type frame designed to be transported and not permanently attached to the ground) must be permitted (usually done by the sign company which owns the sign), cannot exceed seventy-two (72) square feet, cannot have flashing lights, must be three (3) feet inside a property line, are allowed only on non-residential zoned property, and only one portable sign is allowed per lot per street frontage.
In residential zones, signs may not exceed an area of six (6) feet, a maximum height of six (6) feet, and must be setback from the right-of-way ten feet.
Any signs found in violation of the Sign Ordinance will be removed.
Please feel free to contact Diane Hewitt of Inspections & Code, at 706.225.3902, with any questions you may have concerning sign placement.
