Sugar Maple
Acer saccharum

The fruits of the sugar maple are called winged samaras and appear before the tree leafs out in early spring. There are many cultivars of sugar maple, selected for fall color, shape, leaf characteristics, size, hardiness or sugar production. Sugar maple is the source of maple syrup. Native to North America, it is occurs only naturally in the highest Georgia elevations.
