Since the mid-1960s, transportation planning for the community of Columbus, Georgia has been managed by the Columbus-Phenix City Metropolitan Planning Organization (C-PCMPO). As the region grows, it is the responsibility of the C-PCMPO to provide transportation policy to keep Columbus moving.
Since its creation, in 1964, the Columbus-Phenix City Metropolitan Planning Organization has been responsible for maintaining and planning the transportation needs of the region.
The C-PCMPO is comprised of three committees which oversee various aspects of the planning process. Each committee is staffed by local government officials and private citizens from within the transportation study area. The committees, along with a brief description of their responsibilities, are listed below.
Environmental Justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
The mission of the C-PCMPO is to develop, promote and ensure implementation of a regional transportation plan. To achieve this mission, the committees of the C-PCMPO conduct multiple studies to analyze current traffic patterns and develop plans for the future growth of the region.
The committees publish their findings and recommendations in four separate reports. The reports are titled Unified Planning Work Program, Transportation Improvement Program, Long Range Transportation Plan and Congestion Management Process. Each report has been placed on-line for public review.
