The Columbus Planning Department is reaching out to the community in order to name the latest multi-use trail going under construction this summer. The proposed trail which has temporarily been called the South Lumpkin Trail will run from Eagle Trace Apartments on Torch Hill Rd to Cusseta Rd and will be available to pedestrians and bicyclists. The South Lumpkin Trail is a Rails to Trails project which will utilize an abandoned railroad in order to create a multi-use path like the Fall Line Trace. The trail will link 7 schools, a park, restaurants, and residential areas; as well as various community organizations. This trail is proposed to one day link with the Riverwalk and Columbus' overall trail network. - take our survey

It is the policy of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to routinely incorporate bicycle, pedestrian, and transit (user and transit vehicle) accommodations into transportation infrastructure projects as a means for improving mobility, access, and safety for the traveling public. Accordingly, GDOT coordinates with local governments and regional planning agencies to ensure that bicycle, pedestrian, and transit needs are addressed beginning with system planning and continuing through design, construction, and maintenance and operations. This is the ?Complete Streets? approach for promoting pedestrian, bicycle, and transit modes of travel in the State of Georgia.
The concept of Complete Streets emphasizes safety, mobility, and accessibility for all modes of travel (including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and motorists) and individuals of all ages and abilities. The design of transportation projects for multiple modes of travel requires the balancing of the needs of each mode. This ?balance? must be accomplished in a context sensitive manner appropriate to the type of roadway and conditions within the project and surrounding areas..

Following a community meeting in November 2011, Mayor Teresa Tomlinson named a thirty person commission to study the feasibility of a passenger rail line from Columbus to Atlanta, Georgia. The Mayor's Commission on Passenger Rail is chaired by State Representative Calvin Smyre and Columbus attorney and rail enthusiast Edward Hudson and is comprised of business leaders, transportation officials, elected officials, and interested citizens.
Since its first meeting on January 4, 2012, the Mayor's Commission on Passenger Rail has made great strides by arranging to have the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) include Columbus, Georgia in its state rail plan. Also, the Commission was successful in gaining the GDOT's permission to access $300,000 in federal L230 transportation study funds to conduct a full feasibility study of the Columbus, Georgia intercity passenger rail line. The Commission expects the City to publish a Request for Proposal for a Rail Feasibility Study later this summer.
Meetings are on the first Wednesday of each month at 9:00 a.m. and are open to the public. There will be no July meeting.
