She was born at Fort Benning, Georgia. During her childhood, she lived in various locations throughout the United States and Europe. Her father retired from the Army with more than 27 years of service. She graduated from high school in Wuerzburg, Germany. Mrs. Bishop attended Columbus Technical College and Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. Mrs. Bishop is currently serving her 4th four-year term as Clerk of the Municipal Court for Muscogee County, Georgia. She is the first African American to be elected to a citywide post in Columbus, Georgia. Prior to being elected, she was a business owner and employee of the State Department of Corrections for more than 16 years. She has served in various positions, such as, Accounting Clerk, Accounting Technician and Business Manager. Mrs. Bishop supervised more than 30 employees and managed a twenty million dollar budget. She also served as Secretary to the Assistant Director and Personnel Secretary for Georgia Educational Television. Mrs. Bishop has received numerous awards including Outstanding Community Service Award from the Columbus Professional Women in 1993 and 1995. She received the Citizen of the Month Award in 1995; the Outstanding Achievement in Community Involvement Award in 1999; Women on the Rise Award in 2001; Kiwanis Public Service Award in 2002; and the Big Sister/Big Brother Big Heart Award in 2004; she also received the State Employee of the Year Award for the State of Georgia. An active participant in various organizations, Mrs. Bishop serves on the board of the American Cancer Society, Girls Inc., the Liberty Theater, and the prestigious Congressional Club in Washington, DC, where she holds the position of Vice-President. Mrs. Bishop is the first African American to hold this position since the club's inception in 1908. She is also the President of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. She is a member of the NAACP and the Urban League, a Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow. She is a member of the ML Harris United Methodist Church. | |||
